Well people we’ve finally made it. This Sunday I grab this city by the lips and yank as hard as I can. Have I made that joke before? I’m pretty sure I have. Anyway yesterday I went over and picked up my number and packet. Not going to lie I got a little misty when I did. No signs of Alanis there though. I was hoping to have a short two or three hour debate and weigh in with her but I guess she didn’t want to face off with me. I’m a little disappointed. Perhaps she will be at the spaghetti dinner on Saturday.
Beer intake is at an all time low. I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I haven’t touched the stuff since Tuesday, and that was just one Smuttynose Pale Ale on the train home. Are you crying? Fear not, come next week I’ll be hitting the sauce like there’s no tomorrow.
So that’s it. Next week I’ll post up and let you guys know how I did. I expect to come in third at the very least. Wish me luck kids.

So it’s been a long and bumpy ride and next week it finally comes to a close. After drinking binges, vacations, site crashes and even some running next Sunday I will finally hit the streets of New York and face not only 26 plus miles of asphalt but also one Miss Alanis J Morissette. I have no idea if J is her middle initial or if she is married but I thought they both made a nice addition to her name, I’m sure you agree.
So with the site being down we haven’t had a chance to chat in the month of October. Well in short I have tapered off from the running, which from what I understand you should be doing anyway so it worked out well with my usual laziness. A few five mile runs here and there to keep me somewhat in tune but right now I am feeling relaxed and ready. My prediction for the marathon? Third place at least, possibly second if tripping is allowed, I haven’t heard the hand book yet.
This weekend I plan on another short run and a couple next week. Then come Friday I go into hibernation. Saturday will be Halloween and the wife is delighted by the fact that we will be spending it indoors and most likely I’ll be going to sleep around 10 at night. Good times will be had by all I’m sure.
Next Friday look for the final installment, will you cry? God I hope so.
I love me some hops, I’ve never hid that fact and I won’t for you or anyone else. What kind of friend are you?! Jerk.
Anyway, based on my love for the hop I picked up a fresh bottle of Lagunitas Brewing Companies Hop Stoopid Ale. A double IPA that I grabbed while visiting the brewery last week. I couldn’t of been happier.
If you’ve read the site before (before the great crash of 09 that is) you know I’m not a big fan of high alcohol beers, mostly because I’m not a fan of alcohol flavor. Or the burnies you get when you drink it. I’m more of a White Russian kind of guy, those are classy. So normally I get a little nervous around the double IPAs because they can really get up there. But after having a sample of this one at the brewery I was entranced by its delightful hop character and aroma. Wow that sounds unmanly.
The ABV on this one gets up to about 8%, which isn’t too shabby for a beer but not breaking any records. So you get more of the hop flavor which is what I like. That’s not to say that once this beer starts to warm a bit that the alcohol doesn’t make a showing, but at no point is it so overpowering that I want to put the glass down. Nope I was a fan of this one all the way threw. The only problem I have with it is now that I’m back on the east coast I don’t think I’m going to be able to find another.

The wife and I recently made a trip out to California and spent a great deal of time driving around taking in some of the states wondrous sights. By this I of course mean a bunch of breweries. Oh sure we saw the Pacific Coast Highway and Disneyland and all that fun, but what a glorious sight it was to walk god knows how many blocks in an unknown section of San Francisco and finally arrive at the 21st Amendment Brewery. I was even more excited to find out that my wife and I had stumbled into their Oktoberfest celebration. Oh joy of joys.
Now when I say Oktoberfest I should clarify. There was no Oomph band running around but there was a dandy makeshift grill going on outside with sausages to boot and the wait staff was frolicking around in their lederhosen and beer maid outfits. But most importantly their Oktoberfest beer was on draft, and the Oomph music was on the sound system. But I would be happy in a dark alley with a homeless person if they serve a tasty Oktoberfest beer and 21st Amendment does indeed. A decent amount of malt without being too overpowering, a good beer to drink with dinner and slosh around in a liter mug. I was in the door only 5 minutes and already giddy. Unfortunately there were no liter mugs.
My wife was happy to find that the Watermelon Wheat was still available at the brewpub. It isn’t on tap but available in cans, which 21st Amendment is proud to serve most of their beers in. You’d never tell it wasn’t fresh from the keg and the beer is really great on a summer day or as it was the day we visited on a 65 degree San Francisco fall day. Me on the other hand opted for the IPA after my Oktoberfest excursion, which was mighty tasty. From there it becomes a bit of a blur, cause ya know, I like to party. But all the beers I tried that day were spot on.
The food was a big hit with the little lady and I as well. I didn’t think I would find good wings on the west coast but way to prove me wrong fellas. You win! The fish and chips use red snapper, which was a nice touch and tasted like they had just been caught from whatever ocean is out there. I have no idea if red snapper comes from the ocean. All around good times.
After dinner I had a nice little buzz going and we walked around the area a bit. Turns out it’s right near the ball park so you can tie one on and then go watch the baseballs get hit into the airs and such. Or as I did try to take pictures of the ballpark in little to no sunlight on my cell phone and send them back home to people. Good times all around and I’d hit this spot again next time we’re in San Fran.
So hey, what happened? Well the site went down, then it got lost, then it got back up but without any of the original content. Will the old content be back? Hell if I know, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. For those of you reading this for the first time BeerandJoe.com has been up for about a year and in its heyday was the greatest beer site ever imagined. It would get millions of hits a day and people would comment for weeks on end about a single post. Alright that’s a lie all around but still, it was a dandy site. But the point is its back, in a shell of what it was I know but you’ll get what you’ll get and you’ll like it. Jerks.
